What they’re talking about is hardly new – we’re all familiar with the “Shakespeare Syndrome”, i.e. being forced into the academic study of an author almost (*) invariably ruining the potential for later-life...

Fully agree, RK, the act of critiquing is its own reward (and a rich one indeed!) However, while I didn't ask for a points system (and resist gamification of all kinds), now that it's there I find myself looking for the validation. 😉
That's my experience, but I figure everytime I critique I'm learning something as I admire the writer's imagination. Thems the brakes.
