In the context of this sentence, which makes more sense. "Brought out" a camera, or took it out?
The narrator is in an art class, and he wants to take a photograph of the sculpture they'll be drawing so that he can draw from the photograph later.

"After Christine chose the sculpture for that day and arranged it on the stage, I [took out OR brought out] my camera. The camera itself generated interest and questions, but when I explained what I’d be using the photos for, a hush fell on the room. One of the students finally asked if that wasn’t cheating."

'Brought out' for me has an implication that he's getting it out to show the class as an object of interest as much as to use it; 'took out' feels more like he just gets it out in order to use it and the interest from others is incidental. If that helps.

Thanks. I used "brought out" and my reader suggested the switch. I don't see the difference TBH.

ALTHOUGH... I see now that the preceeding sentence uses "took out" (and so maybe the passage needs tweaking to reduce the redundancy) So, having already used "took", maybe that is why I had used "brought". I do agree that "brought out" is more like him REVEALING it, which is more along the lines of what I'm going for.

What I wasn’t expecting was the response in class when I took out my camera to capture photographs of the assigned plaster molds. After Christine chose the sculpture for that day and arranged it on the stage, I brought out my camera. The camera itself generated interest and questions, but when I explained what I’d be using the photos for, a hush fell on the room. One of the students finally asked if that wasn’t cheating.

Agree with Josephine. The character's relationship with the camera determines the right choice of word, and if the bringing out of the camera constitutes a reveal, the pretensions of this character might warrant the alternative 'I presented my camera.'
