Most debut novels don't sell more than to friends and family - and then they sit on the long tail for a long time. I can't find the link now, but it's what happens.

Three dollars, eighty seven. The royalty on one eBook, which I bought myself to test the system. There I was wallowing in self pity, and this conversation has cheered me up no end. I have no idea how people find books on the Smashwords site unless they already know what/who they are looking for. I certainly could never find my own book unless I went through the authors dashboard.
