This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

Hello everyone,

A Open University writer’s group that I’m in posted about submissions for an anthology, and I thought a few people here might be interested. And so, I asked the person if I could share the info here. It’s a new poetry anthology, funded by Longford Home of Halloween (Ireland, but open to international submissions) who are inviting submissions as follows:

Samhain Harvest
Poetry submissions invited for an anthology of Poetry funded by Longford Home of Halloween.

Submission requirements:

Poets may submit up to three poems of no more than 40 lines per poem, with a theme to suit Samhain, Halloween, autumn, folklore, solstice, ghostly, haunting, harvest, other-worldly, etc. Poems must be written in English and typed in Times New Roman 12pt and submitted as a Word doc (see note below re: sizing). National and international submissions welcome. Entrants 18+. Please include an author biography of a maximum of 50 words, written in 3rd person. If you are submitting more than one poem, ensure that each poem is on a separate page, although you may submit all 3 poems in a single document.

The anthology will be published in A5 format, so you may like to pay attention to page sizing when composing your poems. Please submit as an A5-sized Word doc if possible, as this will help ensure the poem’s layout is as you intend.

Unfortunately, we are not in a position to pay successful poets but those whose poems are chosen will be invited to the launch of the anthology in Longford in October, and will receive one copy of the book, by collection. (Please note, we will NOT be able to post books; you may arrange for someone to collect on your behalf.) Selected poets will also be invited to read during the launch. Copyright will remain with individual authors. Submission does not guarantee inclusion in the anthology.

Please submit your poems, bio, and contact information to: [email protected] with ‘SAMHAIN SUBMISSION’ in the subject line. Thank you.

Submissions will be accepted up to Friday 28th August 2026. Entries received after this date will not be accepted.

This sounds like a great anthology project, but it's a shame they aren't able to post contributor copies. And one copy is pretty stingy when there is no other payment.

Although they welcome international submissions, I suspect it will mainly attract local poets who can attend the shindig.

I know, that is a real shame. Maybe their funding isn’t enough to pay for it. Also might appeal to those who want to get published but don’t mind not seeing themselves in print, if it were me I’d like a copy. I wonder if they’ll only be available to buy in Ireland.

@Sedayne I saw in a post on the author’s platform that another piece of your writing got accepted for publication, and I wanted to say congratulations 🥳 but I don’t have an account and couldn’t comment there, it’s the story about one of my fave characters of yours (besides Neil). I still remember uncle Joe so vividly from your first submission and then the short story submission. Not surprised it elicited such emotion in the Editor.

Ah, thanks so much.

I didn't realise you needed an account to comment.
I'll be sure to post the link in the Colony when it comes out.

You know Joe and Dave's story only really came through properly after your Lab critiques. They are indebted to you.

I’d still love a novel about them.

I’ll check re the comments, but I thought it said something about signing in to comment.

I’m thinking of starting a literary magazine next year once I’ve finished my thesis, would you be interested in being a reader for submissions or some kind of editorial role? Not sure of the details yet, but let me know.

Congrats!! That's great news! I'm in the same boat as Rachael, I can't comment either.

Thanks Rachel. I need to remember to post in the Colony too.

But I think you should be able to log in to the Platform. Although it might be a different password to your Colony log in. Maybe try the password reset thing?

As Platform+ you should be able to set up a profile and blog too. I'd love to read whatever you had to say in a blog.

@Rachael Burnett @RK Wallis
I just checked on the Platform. You both should be able to log in and not only have access to commenting, but also to creating your own Author Platform and your own blog. There's actually loads you can do on the free version. Worth exploring when you get time.
I’ll take a look. Do you know whether is it the same password or login as where our membership details are as I remember that being a separate account and each year never being able to find where it is, or is this another login that you create?

I'm pretty sure it's the same. It was always a bit confusing even before the platform set up. I didn't have to create a new account.

Thanks for looking, Rachel. I got in through the platform button next to the home button up top. At least, I can comment :) I hope I can figure it out.

Once I created my page, I could comment again. I'm just not in the list of authors on the main page of the new platform, but I know why, and I'm content with being able to participate in comments for the time being.
