• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

    • Don't give offence
    • Don't take offence

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

Just to update you on what’s currently going on behind the scenes.

We’ve had a lot of work to do on the audio side of things (podcasts and the “Hear Me Read It” button feature on your blog posts).

You won’t actually see anything new, this is all functional stuff, to make your audio faster to stream and highly available across most countries and continents. Not sure about Antarctica, tho.

Much, but not all, of this has now been done. Probably another day’s work.

One downside (the platform is still in beta, OK?) is that for about 24 hours, any existing link to your audio files may not work. Let me know in Bug Reports if that’s happening, please. After 24 hours, propagation will have concluded and audio files will play again :)

Gary, the carpenter on Rothera Station's winter skeleton team, has been feeling out of sorts. The penguins outside have taken on a surprising allure. To quell his discomfort, he picks up a novel left by a summer researcher, the only one he hasn't read yet. It's about nuns doing oddly naughty things discussing biscuits, and... well, it gets him through the winter.
