New Writers Novel Prize 2026


Welcome to the first-ever New Writers Novel Prize, in association with The Novel Factory. We are seeking the first 500 words of your unpublished novel or novella. The winner will receive £1,000 plus Lifetime Access to The Novel Factory (Version 3) writing software (worth $649).


Second place will receive £300 plus a 12-month Standard


Subscription to The Novel Factory, and third place will win £200 plus a 12-month Basic Subscription to The Novel Factory. All Entrants will receive a 30% discount off annual subscriptions or lifetime licences to The Novel Factory (details in the confirmation emall upon entry).

Entry Rules

• Theme: Titles.
• Word count: Maximum 1,500 words.
  Genre: Any, except poetry or brutality/graphic/violent content.
  Eligibility: Open to writers aged 16 and over.
  Limit: One entry per person.
  Originality: Entries must be original, unpublished, and not submitted to any other competition.
  Story requirement: Entries must be based on the title of one of Val Wood's books, and the story must clearly reflect the chosen title.
• Al-generated work: Al-generated work will not be accepted.
• Edits: No edits can be made after submission.

Prizes

Phase 1- Screening: Each judge receives a batch of submissions and reads the opening 250 words of every story in it - enough to see if it grabs them from the very first line narrowing their batch down to a handful of finalists.

Our writing competition makes a creative comeback this year with a new circular flash fiction category guaranteed to get your head spinning!


Alongside our Chalk Circle 1500 category, we are launching the Chalk Circle 360. Write a piece of circular flash fiction that turns 360 degrees using exactly 360 words (excluding the title).


Like the ancient icon Ouroboros, the serpent that devours its own tail, a circular flash fiction story ends where it began. Writers may draw inspiration from symbolic Ouroboros features such as self-reflection; recycling and renewal the assimilation of opposites; the constant cycle of creation and destruction. Here's an example written by one of the judges.
