• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

Hi folks, I was a member a few years back. Was just starting to make some progress with my book (with help from some very kind Litopians) when my health fell off a cliff, and I haven't been able to do much since 😑 Still, I'm starting to get back on the horse again now, so thought it was time to check in.

I decided that looking for an agent probably isn't sensible at this point, given that dropping off the face of the planet for a few years at a time might put a degree of strain on a working relationship, so I'm going to be self-publishing. Currently trying to learn the seven or eight different professions needed to carry that off effectively. Any advice desperately gratefully received. On the plus side, I now have a second not-quite-finished manuscript I'm failing to publish, so that should make things twice as difficult help.

Anyway, sorry for the long absence, but looking forward to reconnecting!

Nice to run into you, Adrian, and I was made aware of your presence when you dove right into Labs. I too was a member of Litopia in 2005, then I had a baby and got married....and yeah. But I've always had a soft spot for the people on this site. They are all so supportive, kind, and knowledgeable.

You too, and aren't they just! Wonderful community here.

Welcome back. First thing, have you set up an author's page? If not, click down on the platform thing and set one up!
Hey Matt! Um, yes that's all new, I need to do that. How does it work with pen names? I wasn't using one last time I was on here, but I am now. Do I need to start a new account? I don't mind the crossover being obvious to folks on here.

@AgentPete I think it's easy, but this is the second time I've been asked this question in three days and i don't really know. How do we put a pen name in the author profile?

It’s really easy.
Go to your Author Profile page (i.e. click on your name in the top menu, once you’ve logged in at Litopia.com).
Then click Edit.
You’ll now see that your author name has become editable (like all the other things on that page).
Click “Save” when you’re happy.
NB – as the little pop-up window tells you, be careful when you do this, because it will change the link to your Author Profile.
EG my current link is
Code:

But if I changed my author name to Algernon Cryptwhistle… as I’ve too-often fantasized… then it would become

I think I was at uni with a guy called Algernon Cryptwhistle. (The theology degree in Durham in the early nineties was full of chaps with names like that.) He probably went on to be Archbishop of Somewhere.
