• Café Life is the Colony's main hangout, watering hole and meeting point.

This is a place where you'll meet and make writing friends, and indulge in stratospherically-elevated wit or barometrically low humour.

Some Colonists pop in religiously every day before or after work. Others we see here less regularly, but all are equally welcome. Two important grounds rules…

We now allow political discussion, but strongly suggest it takes place in the Steam Room, which is a private sub-forum within Café Life. It’s only accessible to Full Members.

gwen.pngAugust's Book Club is Gwen & Art Are Not in Love by Lex Croucher, and we're on Zoom at 8pm this Saturday, 22nd August.

Quick summary for anyone who hasn't picked it up yet: Gwen and Arthur, betrothed since birth and thoroughly sick of each other, each discover the other's secret and agree to fake a romance so that both of them are protected. It won the 2024 YA Book Prize, and its publisher pitched it as "Heartstopper meets A Knight's Tale".

We're writers, so we'll be pulling it apart rather than simply enjoying it :) How well does that central bargain hold the plot together for an entire novel? Is the dual viewpoint balanced, or does one character dominate? How much medieval detail is actually doing any work? Bring your objections as well as your enthusiasms, both are useful.

There's also Croucher's own path to talk about, from YouTube in 2008 through non fiction and a first novel to a prize winner in 2023.

Free for members, 20 places only, so grab one while they last.
